Etching is a simple process of removing metal from a surface using acids (etchants), in a controlled manner. The choice of etchant allows changes to the way different metal will etch, so that different depths and surface finishes can be achieved.

The areas of metal etched away can be filled with coloured enamel allowing creative effects to be achieved in two major ways, the design to be etched into metal and then how this design is coloured.

Further effects can be achieved by using metal finishing techniques on the etched and filled plates, mirror or satin polished, fabrication and electroplating.
